Media reports US requesting from French contractors to overlook DEI policies
An executive order signed by Trump mandates that all US government contractors, including foreign companies, adhere to policies that prioritize merit-based employment and end DEI practices, which Trump has described as "illegal" and "corrosive." This directive is part of his broader campaign to eliminate “woke policies,” such as promoting gender reassignment treatments for minors, a key issue in his administration.
In a letter sent to French companies, the US Embassy required them to complete a “compliance form” stating they were in line with US federal anti-discrimination laws and pledging to cease any DEI programs. Companies that refused or failed to comply were asked to provide justifications for their stance.
Although the embassy has not confirmed how many companies received the letter, it emphasized that the initiative was part of efforts to curb government inefficiencies, fraud, and waste. A total of 15,600 contracts, loans, and foreign aid programs were reviewed as part of this process.
The move has caused concern within the French government, with a senior official from the Ministry of Economy and Finance expressing disapproval of the policy, calling it incompatible with French values. Finance Minister Eric Lombard is reportedly planning to address the issue with American officials.
