Taiwan initiates largest yearly military drill Amid growing tensions with China

(MENAFN) Taiwan on Saturday initiated its largest yearly military drill, simulating a range of combat scenarios with China in a two-part drill aimed at assessing the island’s defense readiness amid growing tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

The 41st Han Kuang drill began with a 14-day computerized simulation phase, using the U.S.-developed Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS) platform, as reported by a state-run agency. This marks the longest duration for such simulations in the history of the exercise, running through April 18.

The live-fire segment of the drills is set for July 9 to 18.

Major General Tung Chi-hsing, who leads the joint operations planning division at the Ministry of National Defense, announced that the upcoming tabletop simulations will encompass scenarios involving conventional military confrontations with China's People’s Liberation Army (PLA), in addition to exploring "gray zone" strategies—coercive measures that fall short of outright warfare.

China considers Taiwan a renegade province and has not dismissed the option of using force to assert control. In response, Taiwan continues to enhance its defense posture and deepen security ties with international partners, especially the United States.
