Robust earthquake strikes Myanmar with tremors felt in Thailand

(MENAFN) A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread damage across the country and in neighboring Thailand. The US Geological Survey reported that the 7.7-magnitude quake hit northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar, at a shallow depth of 10 km. A subsequent 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed shortly after.

In Thailand, the tremors led to the collapse of a 30-story building under construction in Bangkok's Chatuchak Park area, killing one worker and injuring at least 50 others. Some individuals remain trapped under the rubble, though the exact number is still unknown. Buildings in Bangkok, including skyscrapers, were shaken by the earthquake, causing panic among locals and tourists, who rushed outside. In response, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared Bangkok an “emergency zone” and labeled the earthquake a national emergency.

The tremors were also felt in Myanmar's Mandalay and Naypyidaw, where buildings collapsed and cracks appeared in the roads. Additionally, the earthquake's impact reached as far as China’s Yunnan province.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the disaster, offering assistance to both Myanmar and Thailand.
