Bernie Sanders calls Trump tariffs 'counterproductive,' warns of Musk’s job cuts
"What I think is tariffs, used selectively, are a good idea if they're going to protect American jobs," Sanders said. "But to arbitrarily, out of nowhere, come up with a tariff that they can't even justify or explain to virtually every country on Earth is absolutely counterproductive." He warned that the immediate consequences of such tariffs would be "very significant."
Trump had announced a 90-day reprieve for over 75 countries from a new tariff deadline, exempting them temporarily from hikes above the 10% baseline—China excluded.
Shifting his focus to tech mogul Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Sanders criticized Musk for aggressive job cuts within the federal workforce, likening him to a "chainsaw." He warned that Musk’s approach foreshadows a larger threat to employment posed by artificial intelligence and automation.
