EU, Ukraine Highlight Diplomatic Progress Regarding Ceasefire Deal
During the 10th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Association Council in Brussels, the two sides expressed cautious optimism about diplomatic efforts to halt Russia’s ongoing war.
At the same time, they reaffirmed their strong condemnation of Moscow’s actions. A joint statement issued after the high-level talks noted that, "The Council stressed that the proposal of a ceasefire, if accepted by Russia, can be an important step in this direction and that it is now (time) for Russia to show its willingness to achieve peace."
The meeting was led by Ukrainian Premier Denys Shmyhal, while the EU delegation was headed by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos also participated in the discussions.
The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law" and expressed approval of the results from the Saudi-hosted talks.
Despite the diplomatic progress, the EU and Ukraine also condemned ongoing Russian attacks against civilians, as well as a recent strike on residential areas in Kryvyi Rih that resulted in the deaths of 20 individuals, including nine children.
