WHO announces next pandemic possibly to hit ‘tomorrow’

(MENAFN) The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that another deadly pandemic could emerge as soon as "tomorrow," urging nations to prepare for future outbreaks. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for governments to invest in health security and finalize the Pandemic Agreement, an international treaty on pandemic prevention and response.

Following the devastating impact of COVID-19, which caused approximately 20 million deaths and over $10 trillion in global economic losses, Ghebreyesus described the emergence of a new pandemic as “an epidemiological certainty.” He stressed that while a pandemic could occur in decades, it could also strike at any moment. Ghebreyesus highlighted the need for countries to balance spending on defense and health security, pointing out that the cost of preparing for health threats is far lower than military expenditures.

The Pandemic Agreement currently being discussed aims to enhance global preparedness for future health emergencies. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, despite historically being a major contributor to the WHO, began the process of withdrawing the US from the organization in January, citing its handling of the COVID-19 crisis. He has also appointed critics of mainstream pandemic policies to key health positions.
