Chinese President Warns of Trade Wars
(MENAFN) China's Leader Xi Jinping emphasized that trade and tariff conflicts "will produce no winner," during remarks made at the beginning of his overseas journey to Vietnam on Monday.
He criticized protectionism, stating it "will lead nowhere," according to an official release.
These statements come at a tense moment in the ongoing commercial confrontation between China and the United States, the globe's two biggest economies.
The Trump administration recently enacted steep 145 percent tariffs on products from China, prompting Beijing to counter with its own 125 percent tariffs — an action that also indicated China's decision to halt any additional tariff increases.
In a related move, the U.S. government also introduced 46 percent duties on Vietnamese goods.
President Xi arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, on Monday, commencing a three-country diplomatic tour across Southeast Asia.
This visit marks his first international trip of 2025 and his fourth official journey to Vietnam since he took on the role of general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in November 2012.
After spending two days in Vietnam, Xi is scheduled to continue to Malaysia at the invitation of King Sultan Ibrahim, and will wrap up his regional trip on Friday with a state visit to Cambodia, hosted by King Norodom Sihamoni.
The timing of this tour is significant, taking place amid escalating regional tensions and persistent trade disputes with the U.S.
Both nations have been locked in a tit-for-tat escalation involving import taxes.
Despite the tension, China has consistently been Vietnam’s top trading ally for more than twenty years, with total trade exchange exceeding USD260 billion in the previous year.
