Kremlin Says Putin, Trump's Possible Meeting Needs Preparation
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that arranging such a prominent meeting “needs good preparation” and emphasized that it was not seriously brought up during the exchange between Putin and Witkoff.
Peskov had earlier mentioned that a summit between the two leaders might take place “at the appropriate time,” reaffirming that Putin is in favor of eventually meeting Trump face-to-face.
He also noted that “the issues that require discussions are very complicated,” making it unwise to anticipate “some immediate results” from any future talks between the leaders.
The recent dialogue marked Witkoff’s third round of talks with Putin since his appointment as a special presidential envoy advising Trump on conflict resolution.
Prior to his assignment on the Ukraine issue, Witkoff had been active in efforts to reduce conflicts in the Middle East.
Putin and Trump have maintained regular phone contact since Trump took office in January.
The current American administration is aiming to facilitate a ceasefire and a negotiated peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
