Trump Confirms Chinese Electronics Will Face New Tariffs, Shifts Focus to Semiconductor Duties
European stock markets rose Monday morning following Friday’s official announcement that some of these items would escape levies of up to 145%. However, U.S. officials clarified on Sunday that these products would instead be subject to a “semiconductor tariff,” with Trump expected to provide further details soon.
China has urged Trump to "completely cancel" his tariff regime and "return to the right path of mutual respect."
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the new levy will come in addition to global tariffs imposed earlier this month, which are currently paused for 90 days. "We need our medicines and we need semiconductors and our electronics to be built in America," he added.
A U.S. customs notice issued Saturday indicated that smartphones, computers, and other electronics would be excluded from the 125% tariff on goods from China. But Trump refuted this interpretation on social media, asserting that there is no exemption and that "they are just moving to a different Tariff 'bucket'."
Trump further stated, "We are taking a look at Semiconductors and the WHOLE ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN in the upcoming National Security Tariff Investigations." adding he would update the public Monday on semiconductor-related duties.
Semiconductors—vital to everyday electronics such as smartphones and laptops—are small but powerful components that form the foundation of modern computing.
