Zelensky Accuses Russia of Violating ‘Easter Truce’
During the first six hours of the "Easter truce" called by Russian Leader Vladimir Putin, Zelensky reported 387 shellings, 19 assaults by Russian forces, and 290 drone attacks.
The media has not been able to independently confirm these claims.
Putin had ordered a temporary ceasefire on Saturday, instructing his forces to "stop all military activity" in Ukraine. Kyiv stated that it would also follow this directive.
The truce, which was set to last for 30 hours, was scheduled to begin at 18:00 Moscow time (16:00 BST) on Saturday and end at midnight on Sunday, Moscow time. Ukraine, however, has proposed extending the ceasefire for an additional 30 days.
On Sunday morning, Zelensky remarked that Moscow was attempting to create the "impression" of a ceasefire while still engaging in military actions in some regions.
He emphasized that Russia has not fully abandoned its efforts to advance and cause casualties in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president stated that "our soldiers are responding everywhere as the enemy deserves in specific combat circumstances."
Later on Saturday, just hours into the truce, Zelensky asserted that if Russia were genuinely willing to engage in a "full and unconditional silence," Ukraine would reciprocate and mirror Russia’s actions.
He further emphasized that Ukraine’s response would be "symmetrical" and reiterated that the proposal for a full, unconditional 30-day truce remained on the table, awaiting a response from Moscow.
