Boston University Professor Starts Hunger Strike Over Student's Detention
(MENAFN) A professor at Boston University has initiated a hunger strike to bring attention to the suppression of dissent and the unfair treatment of a detained Turkish student.
Nathan Phillips, an environmental scientist, started his protest on April 15 after Boston University officials repeatedly took down a "Free Rumeysa" sign from his fourth-floor office window at the university’s downtown campus.
Before putting up the banner for the final time, Phillips attached a note to his office door that read: “If you take down the banner again, I will start a hunger strike.”
The student at the heart of Phillips' protest is Rumeysa Ozturk, a Fulbright scholar and PhD candidate in child and human development at Tufts University.
She was apprehended by masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents outside her home in Somerville, Massachusetts, close to Boston, on March 25.
Upon returning to his office on April 15 and finding the banner had been removed once more, Phillips fulfilled his pledge and began his hunger strike.
To avoid affecting his teaching and academic responsibilities, Phillips is consuming fluids and electrolytes, including unsweetened coffee and herbal teas, but refrains from eating any solid food
