South Korea’s Former President Appears in Court for Insurrection Trial

(MENAFN) Previous South Korean Leader Yoon Suk Yeol attended the second hearing of his insurrection trial in Seoul on Monday, marking his first appearance in the defendant's seat, based on local news reports.

Clad in a dark suit and red tie, Yoon arrived at the Seoul Central District Court through an underground parking area, as press cameras flashed, as reported by a news agency.

He faces accusations of inciting an insurrection following his brief imposition of martial law on December 3.

This led to the deployment of troops to the National Assembly in what is alleged to be an effort to prevent lawmakers from voting against the declaration.

When the hearing began, the judge announced that the press would be allowed to photograph and film the opening of the session.

However, photographers were instructed to leave before the formal proceedings started.

Filming was restricted during the first hearing.

Yoon, who was ousted from office on April 4 after the Constitutional Court unanimously confirmed his impeachment, could deal with severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, if found guilty.
