Putin aide says Trump comprehends main reasons of Ukraine conflict
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top aide, Yuri Ushakov, stated that the administration of US President Donald Trump understands the fundamental causes of the Ukraine conflict. However, Ushakov highlighted that the widespread anti-Russian sentiment in the West remains a significant obstacle to reaching a peace agreement.
In an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, Ushakov responded to questions about whether the US fully grasps the nuances of Russia’s perspective on a potential peace deal. He suggested that American leadership, including Trump, understands the underlying issues driving the conflict.
Ushakov pointed out, though, that the anti-Russian climate, which has been building in the US and Europe for decades, complicates efforts to move forward with peace proposals that some leaders in Washington are reportedly open to.
While Trump and his team have expressed their goal of brokering a comprehensive ceasefire, Russia maintains that lasting peace will require Ukraine to abandon its NATO aspirations and relinquish claims to Crimea and the four Ukrainian regions that voted to join Russia.
In a separate development, Putin announced a 30-hour Easter ceasefire, which began on Saturday evening. Ukrainian President Zelensky indicated his country would reciprocate. The two sides have accused each other of violating a 30-day pause on energy infrastructure attacks agreed upon in March, with Moscow reporting around 100 violations since then. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that diplomatic time was running out and that the Trump administration might soon reconsider its approach if talks don’t progress.
