Fatal shooting takes over US university
FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower confirmed that the two deceased were not university students, although the shooter is believed to be enrolled at the school, according to the Associated Press.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil identified the suspect as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a local sheriff’s deputy. “Unfortunately, her son accessed one of her firearms,” McNeil stated.
CNN, citing a law enforcement source, reported that three weapons were recovered: one on the suspect, a shotgun inside the Student Union building, and another firearm found in a nearby vehicle.
The shooting occurred around midday near the Student Union on FSU’s Tallahassee campus, leading to an immediate lockdown and shelter-in-place order for the university community. FSU’s main campus serves over 42,000 students.
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare reported that six people were hospitalized as a result of the shooting. One victim remains in critical condition, while the other five are in serious condition.
Speaking from the White House, President Donald Trump said he had been fully briefed on the incident, calling it “a horrible thing.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also offered condolences, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “Our prayers are with our FSU family, and state law enforcement is actively responding.”
