US puts in work to ‘set its demands realistically’ in discussions with Iran

(MENAFN) During recent negotiations in Rome, a US delegation led by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi worked to present more realistic demands in talks mediated by Oman, according to an informed source speaking to RT. The talks, which took place on Saturday, saw the delegations remain in separate rooms while Omani mediators conveyed messages between the two sides.

This round of negotiations came two weeks after US President Donald Trump issued a threat of military action against Iran unless a deal on its nuclear program could be reached. According to the source, the American delegation made efforts to align its demands more realistically in the second round of talks, and both sides made significant progress in their discussions.

Araghchi noted that the atmosphere in Rome was “relatively positive” and facilitated progress on key principles and objectives for a potential deal. However, he acknowledged that many in Tehran believe the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the original nuclear deal, is no longer sufficient. Trump had withdrawn from the deal during his first term, accusing Iran of non-compliance and reimposing sanctions. Tehran has denied any wrongdoing but has scaled back its commitments, including increasing its uranium enrichment.

In response to concerns about Iran's nuclear program, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reiterated that Iran's nuclear efforts are entirely peaceful and the country is ready to address any doubts. Technical experts are set to meet again ahead of the next round of negotiations scheduled for April 26 in Oman.
