US files law suit against state over transgender athletes

(MENAFN) The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state of Maine for not complying with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in February, which prohibits transgender women—biological males—from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. The order also threatens to withdraw federal funding from institutions that do not enforce the policy.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the lawsuit on Wednesday, stating that Maine’s actions violate Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal funding. Bondi argued that the state is failing to protect female athletes and is thereby discriminating against them.

The legal case references two specific incidents in which transgender athletes won girls’ sporting events, including a pole vaulter who secured a title at the state indoor track and field championships earlier this year. Bondi emphasized that the issue goes beyond sports fairness, raising concerns about public safety. She claimed that male athletes have access to women's restrooms and locker rooms and noted that some female athletes have suffered serious injuries when competing against transgender opponents.

“This is about protecting every girl,” Bondi stated, dismissing concerns about the lawsuit’s focus on a small number of athletes. “Even if it’s just one case, we will act.” She also mentioned ongoing investigations into similar situations in other states, such as Minnesota and California.

This lawsuit intensifies the conflict between the Trump administration and Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills. During a February event at the White House, Trump directly confronted Mills over the executive order, warning of potential federal funding cuts. Mills responded with, “See you in court.”

Following the lawsuit, Mills criticized the move as part of a broader and aggressive attempt to pressure her state. She labeled the recent funding cuts “unlawful” and pledged to strongly contest the legal action.

Since returning to office on January 20, Trump has signed multiple executive orders targeting transgender rights. These include banning transgender individuals from serving in the military, reversing diversity and inclusion programs established under President Joe Biden, and implementing the ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports.

The administration’s stance has sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ rights organizations and civil rights groups. However, supporters argue that these policies are essential to maintain fairness and safety in women’s athletics.
