Attack on Tourists in Kashmir Sparks Diplomatic Visits
This tragic incident prompted Premier Narendra Modi to curtail his official visit to Saudi Arabia.
Modi had just arrived in Jeddah for what was planned as a two-day diplomatic mission, but Indian authorities confirmed to the media that he will be returning prematurely on Wednesday due to the events.
The ambush occurred in the Baisaran area near Pahalgam, a well-known vacation spot in southern Kashmir.
The location is accessible only by foot, yet it is commonly bustling during peak tourist months. Officials labeled the episode as one of the most devastating attacks in recent times.
“Medical teams were swiftly mobilized and casualty evacuation commenced,” stated the Indian Army, further noting that a combined operation with law enforcement was “in progress, with all efforts focused on bringing the attackers to justice.”
The majority of those killed were Indian citizens hailing from different parts of the country, although officials have not yet shared specific details about the victims' identities.
Following the incident, Home Minister Amit Shah flew to Srinagar after informing Modi about the situation.
There, he held discussions with local security personnel to assess the situation on the ground.
The assault took place during a four-day visit to India by US Vice President JD Vance, who also "condoled the victims."
