Sudan inks oil exploration agreement with Russia
The Sudanese Ministry of Energy and Petroleum announced that Mohamed Awad Al-Khair, the acting undersecretary of energy and oil, held technical discussions with the Russian firms about further agreements and partnerships in the oil sector. The talks focused on opportunities for collaboration with the Sudan National Petroleum Corporation (Sudapet), particularly in oil exploration and production.
Sudan has been pursuing increased Russian investment in various sectors, including gold mining and oil, although these efforts have been challenged by the ongoing civil war. The Sudanese government has made it clear that it is looking to strengthen ties with Russia to help resolve the conflict, with Khartoum's ambassador to Moscow, Mohammed Sirraj, stating earlier this month that Sudan hopes Russia can assist in ending the war.
The oil agreements with Russia include plans to explore over 20 oil wells in regions that are deemed safe from the ongoing violence. Despite the unrest caused by the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Sudan continues to seek foreign partnerships in key sectors such as energy.
Additionally, Sudan has been working on a deal with Russian company Power Machines to upgrade its hydropower infrastructure. The energy ministry reported that a group of Russian companies had recently arrived in Sudan to explore further investment opportunities and discuss future collaborations with senior Sudanese officials.
