Strong Earthquake Strikes Istanbul
(MENAFN) A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Turkey on Wednesday, with the epicenter located in the Silivri district of Istanbul, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The seismic event occurred at 12:49 p.m. local time (0949 GMT) and was intensely felt across Istanbul—a metropolis housing more than 15 million inhabitants—as well as in adjacent provinces.
The shaking led panicked residents to evacuate buildings out of fear.
A subsequent tremor, registering a magnitude of 4.9, followed shortly afterward at 1:02 p.m. (10:02 GMT), with its origin reported off the coast of Buyukcekmece in the Sea of Marmara.
Following the evaluation of data from the 112 Emergency Call Center, AFAD stated that there were currently no indications of fatalities or structural damage.
The authority confirmed that all pertinent organizations and emergency units had been dispatched, and inspections were ongoing to determine possible impacts and uphold public security.
The office of the Istanbul governor also issued a statement, noting that, at present, "no reports of destruction have been received, and our relevant units are continuing their field scanning efforts."
Officials advised the public to stay away from buildings that show signs of damage or are believed to be unsafe. They also urged residents to limit the use of vehicles and to avoid overloading mobile networks unless in urgent situations.
