Rubio says US-Ukraine agreement ‘important step to end war’
Although the agreement lacks any provisions for US security guarantees to Ukraine—one of the original goals—Rubio described the deal on X as “a milestone in our shared prosperity and an important step in ending this war,” crediting President Donald Trump’s leadership.
Talks over the deal had been underway for months and were initially expected to conclude during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s visit to Washington in February. However, that meeting ended in a contentious exchange, with Trump accusing Zelensky of being ungrateful and irresponsibly risking a broader war.
This development coincides with ongoing US-Russia negotiations aimed at brokering a ceasefire. Reports suggest the US proposal includes recognizing Russian sovereignty over Crimea, freezing the conflict along current front lines, and accepting Russia’s control over large parts of four other regions.
In a gesture toward peace, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a temporary ceasefire from May 7 to May 10, citing humanitarian concerns. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the move as an opening for unconditional negotiations with Kiev. However, Zelensky dismissed the gesture as a political tactic and instead demanded a full 30-day ceasefire. Lavrov responded by suggesting such a pause would only serve to help Ukraine regroup militarily.
