US senator issues warning to Russia with ‘bone-crushing’ sanctions
Since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated in 2022, the US has imposed significant sanctions on Moscow, targeting financial institutions, trade, and energy exports. While President Trump has expressed a desire for productive cooperation with Russia, he has also warned that the US could ramp up pressure, including through additional sanctions, if Russia does not engage in good faith negotiations.
Russia has repeatedly criticized Western sanctions, calling them unlawful and ineffective, claiming that they have not inflicted lasting damage on the Russian economy. Moscow has shown willingness to resolve the conflict, offering a unilateral ceasefire during the Victory Day celebrations, but Ukraine rejected the offer, demanding an immediate and unconditional 30-day truce.
Graham’s bill proposes measures such as banning US citizens from purchasing Russian sovereign debt and imposing a 500% tariff on imports from countries that purchase Russian oil, natural gas, petroleum products, and uranium. The Senator claims that he has secured commitments from 72 Senators to support the bill and enough backing in the House of Representatives to bring it to a vote.
Graham emphasized that the sanctions were designed to support President Trump’s efforts, while also sending a strong message that Russia is seen as the primary aggressor. He warned that if negotiations with Russia stall, these sanctions could “crush” the Russian economy, adding that the measures would serve as a tool in Trump’s strategy to end the war.
