Trump says he blocked Russia from attaining Ukraine
Trump criticized the Biden administration’s 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, calling it one of the most embarrassing events in U.S. history. He argued that this perceived weakness emboldened Putin and contributed to Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine. “He saw what happened in Afghanistan. He said, ‘Wow, this is my chance,’” Trump said.
When asked about Putin’s intentions, Trump said he believed the Russian leader wants peace and claimed Putin respects him. He emphasized that this mutual respect played a key role in deterring a full Russian takeover of Ukraine.
However, Trump declined to specify whether the U.S. would cut military aid to Ukraine if peace talks fail, stating he wanted to keep that detail secret to maintain negotiation leverage.
These remarks follow Trump’s recent warning that Ukraine could be “crushed very shortly” by Russia’s military might. His comments come amid ongoing U.S.-Russia peace negotiations, which reports suggest involve a proposed deal recognizing Russian control over Crimea and parts of four Ukrainian regions, freezing the conflict at the current lines, blocking Ukraine’s NATO membership, and gradually lifting sanctions on Russia.
Despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s firm stance against territorial concessions, Trump hinted he would accept Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
