Venezuela raises largest replica of Soviet Victory Banner
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro declared April 30 as the ‘Day of the Victory of Mankind over Fascism,’ marking the historical breakthrough when Red Army troops captured the Reichstag and raised what became known as the Victory Banner. That moment was led by soldiers Mikhail Egorov and Meliton Kantariya of the 756th Rifle Regiment.
Recalling the historical significance, Maduro noted that back in 1945, the world learned through radio and telegrams that Soviet forces had entered Berlin and brought down Hitler’s regime. The Soviet Union paid a heavy price for that victory, with an estimated 26.6 million lives lost during the war.
The Russian Ambassador to Venezuela, Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov, highlighted the symbolic importance of the ceremony, stating that the banner represents the strong ties between Russia and Venezuela and their shared dedication to truth, peace, and freedom.
Russia will mark the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany with its annual Victory Day parade on May 9. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, President Maduro is expected to attend the commemorations in Moscow.
