Kim Jong-un wants nuclear-armed navy
Kim made the comments during a test of the DPRK’s Choe Hyon multi-mission destroyer. Following the demonstration, he reportedly remarked that the ship still relies on conventional weapons and does not yet provide a dependable level of maritime defense.
Declaring that the current threats to North Korea’s maritime sovereignty demand stronger deterrence, Kim stated it is “high time” to prioritize the nuclearization of the country’s naval forces.
Meanwhile, Russia reaffirmed its commitment to North Korea's defense under an existing military pact. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the treaty—signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un in June 2024—remains active and obligates mutual military support if needed.
Under this agreement, North Korean troops have joined Russian forces in combat operations, specifically during efforts to repel a Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Kursk Region. President Putin has publicly thanked North Korean soldiers for their involvement, praising their bravery, discipline, and combat effectiveness in what he described as the “liberation” of the area.
