Trump adviser clarifies why US must stop army assistance to Europe

(MENAFN)
White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has argued that the United States can no longer afford to fund the defense of European NATO allies, blaming excessive national debt and insufficient contributions from other member states. In a recent interview with the New York Post, Waltz said the U.S., burdened by $33 trillion in debt, must stop subsidizing European security and push NATO members to meet their defense commitments.

The Trump administration is now encouraging European countries to take greater responsibility for Ukraine’s defense, significantly scaling back American involvement. Waltz emphasized that European nations have long viewed Russia as a growing threat, yet many have failed to meet NATO’s defense spending targets.

Waltz also criticized the broader use of U.S. military resources abroad. He pointed to operations in Yemen, where American forces are protecting Red Sea shipping lanes from attacks by Houthi rebels—despite the fact that most of the shipping traffic benefits European nations. He argued that European countries should invest more in their naval capabilities to share this burden.

Beyond Europe, Waltz singled out Canada for not adequately defending its northern regions. He said Canada should establish military bases and deploy icebreakers in the Arctic, especially as competition for control over resources and new shipping routes intensifies due to Chinese and Russian interest in the region.

Currently, the U.S. has only two active heavy icebreakers and a fleet of older tugboats, while Canada operates 20 icebreaking vessels. Trump recently announced plans to significantly expand the U.S. fleet with the addition of around 40 new Coast Guard icebreakers.
