Venezuela Welcomes Putin's Peace Talks Offer

(MENAFN) Venezuelan Leader Nicolás Maduro has expressed his government's approval of Russian Leader Vladimir Putin’s recent call to reopen direct peace discussions with Ukraine.

Maduro shared his views on Sunday during a conversation with Aleksandr Beglov, the Governor of St. Petersburg.

He praised the earlier address made by Putin, in which the Russian leader proposed renewing talks with Kiev, set for May 15 in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I would like to express the joy of our government and the people of Venezuela regarding this announcement. This was a speech of a man who defends the interests of his homeland, yet at the same time has a very clear understanding of what the international environment must be to achieve peace on a global scale,” Maduro stated.

Maduro further emphasized that this perspective resonates with the “majority of the governments and people of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

He voiced strong belief that these nations back “President Putin’s efforts to resume negotiations and return to a path that should have never been abandoned – the path of direct dialogue and mutual understanding between Russia and Ukraine without any external interference.”

Earlier the same day, Leader Putin suggested reinstating peace negotiations with Kiev, explicitly stating that the process should restart without any conditions.

This statement was made public during a press appearance following Victory Day commemorations, which saw Moscow welcoming various international dignitaries and heads of state.
