Russia gets struck by mass flight disruptions
Moscow’s mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, reported that air defense systems had shot down at least eight drones on Tuesday evening and another nine early on Wednesday. These attacks marked the third consecutive day of drone assaults on Moscow, occurring just days before the May 9 Victory Day parade.
Russia's major airlines, including Aeroflot, Pobeda, and S7, warned passengers about the flight disruptions. S7 promised full refunds or alternative rebooking for affected passengers. The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency stated that the restrictions were implemented to ensure the safety of civil aviation.
Residents in several Russian regions reported seeing drones heading toward Moscow, and the attacks targeted military sites like the Kubinka airbase and Shaykovka airfield, according to Andrey Kovalenko, head of Kiev’s Center for Countering Disinformation.
These strikes occurred despite a unilateral ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin from May 7 to May 11, aimed at marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The Kremlin also suggested that the ceasefire could lead to direct negotiations with Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reaffirmed on Wednesday that the ceasefire remains in effect despite the attacks.
