Lebanese Army Apprehends Three After Fatal Post-Election Gunfire
According to a military statement, the individuals—identified as citizens—were arrested at their residences in Younine by an army unit.
These arrests are part of a wider effort to curb the ongoing issue of celebratory gunfire across the country. Last week, the army revealed it had taken 86 people into custody for allegedly discharging firearms into the air after municipal election results were announced in Mount Lebanon and Northern Lebanon on May 4 and 11.
In response to the escalating problem, authorities have suspended all gun permits in the regions of Beirut, the Bekaa, and Baalbeck-Hermel. The measure took effect Saturday and spans the day before, the day of, and two days after the elections held on Sunday.
Despite being against the law, celebratory gunfire continues to be a common occurrence in Lebanon. Data from Beirut-based think tank Information International indicates that stray bullets led to an average of seven fatalities and 15 injuries each year between 2010 and 2021.
