Trump Urges House Republicans to Support Tax, Budget Plan
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to get behind his "big, beautiful" tax and budget proposal, despite lingering hesitation from some within the party.
Trump made a personal appeal on Capitol Hill to address concerns from Republican lawmakers, particularly over tax cuts and proposed changes to the healthcare system. Conservative factions calling for more significant spending reductions are clashing with moderate Republicans, complicating the situation.
The proposed bill extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime, and slashes Medicaid and food assistance programs. It also includes $50 billion to continue construction of Trump's border wall, along with an additional $150 billion for defense spending.
The package is projected to increase the national debt by over $3.3 trillion over the next decade, factoring in interest, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill, titled the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act," later this week.
Currently, House Republicans hold a narrow 220-213 majority over Democrats, with two vacant seats due to the deaths of two Democratic Representatives in March.
