Spain experiences telecom interruption weeks following huge blackout
The outage affected areas such as Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia, Aragon, and the Basque Country. In some locations, access to the 112 emergency hotline was disrupted, prompting local authorities to issue alternative emergency contact numbers.
Telefonica, the country's leading telecom provider, acknowledged that a network upgrade had interfered with fixed communication services for certain clients. The company said the affected systems were quickly isolated and repair teams were deployed. According to Telefonica, full service was restored by 12:30 p.m.
Spain’s Ministry for Digital Transformation confirmed it had been in ongoing contact with Telefonica during the incident and has requested a full report on what occurred.
This disruption follows a major power outage on April 28 that impacted both Spain and Portugal, affecting transportation, communications, and public services. The cause of that blackout is still being examined, with early reports pointing to a voltage irregularity that triggered automatic shutdowns. Spanish Energy Minister Sara Aagesen stated Tuesday that there is no indication the blackout was caused by a cyberattack targeting energy infrastructure.
