EU, UK Impose New Sanctions on Russia
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, both the European Union and the United Kingdom imposed fresh sanctions on Russia, intensifying their strategy to increase pressure on Moscow while simultaneously enhancing their backing for Kiev.
This latest development marks a continued effort by Western nations to influence the trajectory of the ongoing conflict involving Ukraine.
The announcement of these punitive actions came soon after a phone discussion between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. Leader Donald Trump.
Following their exchange, Trump cautioned that enacting further economic penalties against Moscow might obstruct initiatives aimed at resolving the Ukraine war peacefully.
The European Council, which consists of heads of EU countries and senior officials, authorized the 17th batch of sanctions from the bloc.
This round specifically targets what the EU’s foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, referred to as “nearly 200 shadow fleet ships.” Kallas, known for her strong opposition to Moscow, mentioned that additional sanctions “are in the works” in Brussels, suggesting that more actions may soon follow.
According to Western authorities, this fleet enables Russia to bypass restrictions introduced by the G7 to enforce a ceiling on its oil export prices.
In a synchronized action, the UK government also added 18 vessels linked to the same network to its own sanctions registry on the same day.
Moreover, the UK extended its financial restrictions by blacklisting the St. Petersburg Currency Exchange and Russia’s national deposit insurance institution.
These steps are aimed at cutting off significant economic support mechanisms. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy explained that the latest measures are designed to make Putin answer for allegedly “delaying peace efforts.”
