Telecom Disruption in Spain Follows Recent Power Blackout
The communication breakdown was attributed to a system upgrade carried out by the telecom giant Telefonica, which inadvertently interfered with emergency response systems, traditional telephone lines, and internet connectivity.
The disruption began in the early hours of Tuesday and extended across multiple regions, including Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia, Aragon, and the Basque Country.
In numerous locations, the outage caused interruptions to the 112 emergency hotline. As a result, local governments issued substitute contact numbers to maintain access to emergency services.
Telefonica, the primary telecommunications operator in Spain, acknowledged that it performed “some network upgrade work which has affected some companies’ fixed communication services (voice and internet).”
The provider explained that the disruptions were confined to specific systems, and technical crews were dispatched to bring services back online.
The company stated that the source of the disruption was directly linked to the network enhancement process.
According to Telefonica, full functionality was “fully restored” by 12:30 p.m. the same day.
Meanwhile, the Ministry for Digital Transformation announced that it remained in regular communication with Telefonica throughout the incident.
The ministry also requested a comprehensive explanation regarding the cause and impact of the disruption.
