Unprecedented Attack on Mayor's Aides Rocks Mexico City
Ximena Guzman, the mayor’s personal secretary, and political advisor Jose Munoz were pursued and shot at close range by gunmen on a motorcycle along one of the city’s busiest streets. Police suspect the assault was meticulously planned and coordinated.
The Citizen Security Ministry and the attorney general's office have launched investigations to determine the motives behind the killings and track down those responsible.
“I feel deeply saddened by the loss of Ximena and Pepe, with whom I shared many years of hopes and struggles to transform … Mexico City,” Brugada expressed in a press statement after the tragedy.
“In the city government, we are deeply shocked and mourning the loss of two beloved colleagues,” she continued. “The case is being pursued with the same rigor and commitment with which our institutions operate every day.”
While previous incidents have targeted high-profile city officials, such as a 2020 assassination attempt on Mexico’s security chief Omar Garcia Harfuch, this double homicide is being regarded as a rare and shocking event.
