US Deports Asian Immigrants to South Sudan
The individuals, who are originally from Myanmar and Vietnam, were in the process of awaiting immigration proceedings when their attorneys were unexpectedly informed on Monday evening that the two had already been transferred.
By early Tuesday, their lawyers confirmed the men were aboard a flight to South Sudan, reportedly accompanied by around 10 other individuals being deported.
One of the lawyers, Jacqueline Brown, stated in a court document, "Today, I checked the online ICE detainee locator and saw that (my client) was no longer in the ICE detainee locator."
She went on to explain that she contacted the Port Isabel Detention Center via email to confirm her client’s whereabouts.
A detention officer informed her that the person had been removed "this morning."
Upon inquiring about the destination, the officer replied simply: "'South Sudan.'"
This expulsion breaches an urgent order issued by a federal judge in Boston, which explicitly prohibited the Trump administration from transferring foreign detainees to "third-party countries"—those that are neither the detainees' homeland nor a location where they consented to go—without providing "meaningful" notice or allowing them to object, especially if they fear possible torture or inhumane treatment.
