US Boycotts Next G20 Events in South Africa

(MENAFN) The United States has confirmed it will not take part in the upcoming G20 events hosted by South Africa, as announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday.

This decision follows rising tensions between the two countries.

Last week, media outlets first reported the move, which comes as the Trump administration has accused South Africa of supporting what it terms a racially motivated “genocide.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has strongly rejected this accusation, calling it a “completely false narrative.”

During a session before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio explained the reasoning behind the boycott.

He pointed out that the event’s agenda does not "reflect the priorities of this administration."

He also noted that South Africa has aligned itself with nations like Iran and China, which are viewed as strategic competitors by the United States.

“When one country is consistently unaligned with the United States on issue after issue after issue after issue – now you have to make conclusions about it,” Rubio remarked.

Additionally, Rubio criticized South Africa’s stance on Israel, claiming it was “not just off balance but completely geared towards one side.”

In 2023, South Africa filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing genocide during its military operations in Gaza.

In January 2024, the court issued an injunction against Israel, a ruling that the Israeli government has since ignored.
