Taiwan Arrests Chinese Nationals for Boat Landing
This marks the third such incident in the same month, raising concerns about security as Chinese nationals seemingly continue to arrive in Taiwan by boat.
Taiwan has accused China of using these occurrences as a means to "harass" the island.
However, Beijing has not yet responded to the accusations or addressed the recent intrusions.
Taiwan views itself as an independent nation, whereas China regards it as one of its provinces and has not dismissed the possibility of employing force to assert control over it.
According to a statement from the Taiwanese coastguard, the two men were detected sailing into Taiwan’s waters aboard a sampan, which is a small wooden boat, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The men were caught "launching a styrofoam float" from their Chinese-registered sampan off the coast of Erdan Island.
The coastguard released photographs showing one of the men kneeling on a small floating board with a paddle in his hands.
Erdan Island is part of Taiwan’s Kinmen district, which lies just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the Chinese coastline.
