NATO Chief Welcomes Renewed Putin, Trump Dialogue
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte remarked that this interaction signals a meaningful improvement in relations and supports the ongoing restoration of dialogue between the two nations.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Rutte expressed approval of the call, describing it as a “good sign” and applauded Trump’s “leadership” in attempting to address the crisis in Ukraine.
He emphasized that the US president had effectively “broken the deadlock” from the very beginning of his return to office earlier this year, indicating swift and proactive engagement.
Rutte noted that until January, there had been “no discussions with the Russians.”
However, Trump had since taken steps to “open lines of communication” with the Russian leader, thereby initiating a fresh diplomatic approach.
When questioned about the possibility of increasing pressure on Putin, Rutte responded, “Let’s be thankful that Americans are now taking this position, this leadership role.”
He further commented that it wouldn’t be advantageous for him, in his capacity as a NATO figure, to provide commentary on each phase of the ongoing process.
Both leaders, Putin and Trump, characterized their most recent conversation as both fruitful and motivating.
Trump expressed optimism, stating that he anticipated developments on the Ukraine situation within a fortnight.
A formal release from the Kremlin noted that Putin had extended his gratitude to Trump for the “US support in resuming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine,” highlighting a renewed commitment to diplomatic engagement.
