India deploys Russian-made T-72 tanks in attacks against Pakistan
Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, following a deadly terrorist attack in April in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. India attributed the attack to a faction of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, while Pakistan denied involvement. After Indian missile strikes on May 7, Pakistan retaliated with attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in at least 16 deaths and many injuries.
The fighting between the two nations continued until a ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10. The T-72 tanks, a long-standing component of the Indian Army’s armored fleet, were integral to India's military response.
In March, India signed a $248 million contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport for T-72 tank engines, including a technology transfer to support local manufacturing under India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Over the years, Russia has supplied India with military equipment worth billions, strengthening their defense cooperation.
In addition to the T-72 tanks, India also utilized the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system to counter Pakistani strikes, enhancing the country's defense capabilities, according to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. About 60% of India's military hardware is of Russian origin, and both nations are committed to further expanding their defense ties.
