EU Says Ukraine is ‘all on us now’
(MENAFN) European officials supporting Ukraine were reportedly “stunned” by U.S. Leader Donald Trump’s refusal to back their attempts to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This reaction came after a phone conversation between Trump and Putin, according to a report by the media.
A senior European diplomat remarked, “He [Trump] is stepping away,” describing the perception Trump left behind.
The diplomat added, “Supporting and financing Ukraine, putting pressure on Russia: that’s all on us now,” signaling a shift in responsibility to Europe.
The Monday phone call marked the third public interaction between Trump and Putin since Trump assumed office in January. Both leaders characterized the exchange as constructive.
During the conversation, Trump reiterated his stance that the conflict is “a European situation” and emphasized that the U.S. should have never gotten involved.
He also urged for continued direct dialogue between Moscow and Kiev.
Following the call, Trump reportedly provided a personal briefing to the heads of Ukraine, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the European Commission.
An anonymous source informed the media that Trump explicitly stated he is “not ready to put greater pressure” on Russia.
This apparent change in American policy unsettled EU authorities and NATO members in Europe, who had been relying on U.S. assistance to compel Moscow to make concessions through the threat of additional sanctions and sustained military aid to Ukraine.
According to the media European leaders perceived this new American stance as a strategic gain for the Kremlin.
