Singapore’s Premier Wong Reveals New Cabinet
(MENAFN) Following the People’s Action Party (PAP)’s victory in the May 3 general election, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong unveiled his new cabinet on Wednesday.
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will lead a core team of senior ministers, including three newly appointed coordinating ministers: K. Shanmugam, overseeing National Security; Chan Chun Sing, responsible for Public Services; and Ong Ye Kung, who will handle Social Policies. These ministers will assist Wong in governing while also mentoring younger leaders.
While Shanmugam retains his position as Minister for Home Affairs, he will step down as Minister for Law. Chan moves from Education to Defense Minister, and Ong stays as Minister for Health.
Addressing the absence of a second deputy prime minister, a tradition in previous cabinets, Wong explained that the four senior leaders in top positions form "a good arrangement for now."
Newly elected Members of Parliament David Neo and Jeffrey Siow were also appointed to official roles.
Wong, who will continue his tenure as Minister for Finance, emphasized the stability of Singapore’s economic leadership amid global uncertainties. "We are operating in a changed world with rising trade barriers, sharper competition and greater uncertainty, and we need experienced hands at the helm," he stated.
The PAP emerged victorious with 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats in the general election, securing 65.57 percent of the popular vote—an increase from 61.24 percent in 2020.
