Putin Accuses Ukraine of Utilizing Kursk Churches as Fortified Positions
Speaking on Tuesday with local municipal leaders, Putin urged regional officials—among them acting Kursk Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein—to develop a targeted initiative to evaluate the destruction and draft plans for restoring the churches and other affected structures.
While visiting Kursk—a trip only made public on Wednesday—Putin highlighted the enduring presence of the Russian Orthodox Church, saying it had “been with its people throughout history.”
The visit marked Putin’s first appearance in the region since Russian forces fully reclaimed it from Ukrainian control last month. Ukraine had launched the cross-border operation last August, claiming it was part of a strategy to capture ground for future peace talks.
