EU, U.S. Edge Toward Easing Sanctions on Syria Amid Political Shift
The establishment of a new government in Syria is seen as a key moment to revoke sanctions placed on the former Ba'athist regime, a crucial step for the country’s recovery and rebuilding.
The U.S. and EU’s decisions to lift sanctions have been welcomed as significant for Syria’s economic revival.
The EU’s decision came during a foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign affairs chief, confirmed that the bloc’s move to lift sanctions aims to support Syria’s reconstruction.
Under the new policy, EU member states will be allowed to provide financial assistance to Syria's defense and interior ministries for various reconstruction projects, counter-terrorism operations, and efforts related to migration. Sanctions on Syria’s central bank are also expected to be lifted.
Earlier in February, the EU had already taken a preliminary step, suspending sanctions on Syria’s banking, energy, and transportation sectors, while removing several key institutions—such as Syria’s Industrial Bank, Popular Credit Bank, Saving Bank, and Syrian Arab Airlines—from the sanctions list.
Some exceptions were made to the banking ban to allow transactions related to energy, transportation, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction efforts.
