Irish Rapper Faces Terror Charge

(MENAFN) A performer from the Irish-language rap group Kneecap has been formally accused of a terrorism-related offence following an alleged incident involving a flag linked to Hezbollah, an organisation that is banned in the UK.

The episode reportedly occurred during a live performance at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London, on 21 November 2024.

The accused, 27-year-old Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who is known on stage as Mo Chara, is now facing legal proceedings initiated by London’s Metropolitan Police.

His court appearance has been scheduled for Wednesday, 18 June, at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Following the charge, Kneecap addressed the situation in a social media statement, firmly rejecting the accusation: "We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves."

The group described the legal action as "political policing" and went on to call it "a carnival of distraction."

The statement continued with a politically charged critique, drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza: "14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us."

Authorities from the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism division became involved after a video of the gig surfaced online and was brought to their attention on 22 April.
