Western Europe contemplate purchasing US weapons for Ukraine
Trump recently reaffirmed his stance that the Ukraine conflict is a European matter, suggesting that the U.S. may disengage if peace talks fail to yield results. “This is a European situation. It should have remained a European situation,” he stated.
According to Bloomberg, the concept of European countries buying U.S. arms for Ukraine is gaining traction in the EU and UK. Sources said that if Trump cuts off direct U.S. weapons shipments, European allies are prepared to step in and potentially persuade him to continue supplying intelligence to Kiev, which could help Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky maintain resistance.
French President Emmanuel Macron admitted earlier this month that France has exhausted its domestic military resources, having already tripled production and supplied as much as possible without compromising its own defense.
In March 2024, Josep Borrell, then-Vice President of the European Commission, highlighted that EU weapons stockpiles had been severely depleted after two years of supporting Ukraine. He emphasized that the conflict had transitioned from relying on existing stockpiles to requiring sustained industrial production—something the EU currently lacks the capacity to fully support, as it only produces about 40% of the equipment it uses.
Since taking office again in January 2025, President Trump has not approved any new U.S.-funded military aid for Ukraine.
Moscow, meanwhile, continues to warn that Western arms shipments will not change its military goals but will instead prolong the war and increase the chances of a NATO clash. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously said the Trump administration appears to seek peace, in contrast with European leaders who allegedly want to extend the conflict. Despite a rise in Ukrainian drone attacks, Russia’s Foreign Ministry reiterated on Saturday its commitment to a peaceful resolution.
