Biden makes first public appearance following cancer diagnosis declaration

(MENAFN) Former U.S. President Joe Biden has appeared in public for the first time since announcing his diagnosis with stage 4 hormone-sensitive prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. His office confirmed the diagnosis on May 18.

Speaking at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut while attending his grandson’s graduation, the 82-year-old Biden said he was “feeling great” despite the seriousness of his condition. He was accompanied by his wife, former First Lady Jill Biden.

Medical professionals have expressed surprise that the advanced cancer went undetected for so long, noting that a Gleason score of 9 is usually caught during routine screenings. According to a Biden spokesperson, he had not undergone any testing for prostate cancer in more than ten years, with his last PSA test reportedly conducted in 2014. Prior to last week, Biden had never received a prostate cancer diagnosis.

In response to the news, President Donald Trump accused Biden’s aides of exploiting his illness to implement policies without proper authorization, calling it “treason.” Vice President J.D. Vance questioned Biden’s leadership capability, asserting that he had not effectively served the American people.

Republican Senators Ron Johnson and John Cornyn are now pushing for investigations into whether Biden’s condition was deliberately kept hidden during his time in office. Johnson told Axios he plans to summon numerous individuals for testimony, while Cornyn sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting a formal probe into the potential cover-up.

Adding to the controversy, a new book titled Original Sin claims that Biden’s staff concealed early signs of mental decline during his presidency. This revelation has reignited criticism of Biden’s choice to seek re-election in 2024, a campaign he later abandoned after a poor debate showing.

Biden has rejected the mental decline allegations, stating there is no evidence to support such claims. After the Democratic Party’s defeat in the 2024 election, he maintained that he could have won had he stayed in the race.
