Pipeline Leak Sparks Shutdown at Libya’s Hamada Oil Field
According to the NOC, the leak occurred in the southern portion of the pipeline that connects to the Zawiya terminal. In response, crews halted crude flows from Hamada while keeping the Zawiya facility operational to help relieve pipeline pressure.
“Intervention is ongoing to stop the leak, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause,” the corporation stated. It added that expert teams have been dispatched to manage the incident and prevent environmental fallout.
While the leak presents environmental risks to nearby areas, the NOC assured that immediate containment efforts were implemented to minimize impact.
Libya, home to Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, continues to struggle with aging energy infrastructure, a situation worsened by years of conflict and insufficient investment in the sector.
