ASEAN Summit Commences in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
(MENAFN) The 46th ASEAN Summit commenced Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, drawing leaders from Southeast Asia to address pressing regional and international challenges such as US tariff policies, the ongoing Myanmar conflict, and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
The gathering opened with the customary ASEAN handshake, setting the tone for discussions focused on strategic priorities, regional cohesion, and navigating emerging challenges, according to a news agency
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, serving as this year’s rotating chair, is leading the summit.
In his introductory remarks, Anwar revealed he has reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump to propose an ASEAN-U.S. summit later this year aimed at resolving the tariff dispute.
"Indeed, a transition in the geopolitical order is underway and the global trading system is under further strain with the recent imposition of US unilateral tariffs," he stated.
"Protectionism is resurging as we bear witness to multilateralism breaking apart at the seams," he added.
ASEAN nations have faced US tariffs ranging from 10% to 49%, but last month, Trump declared a 90-day suspension of these tariffs, triggering swift diplomatic engagement between ASEAN countries and Washington.
Anwar emphasized ASEAN’s resilience against geopolitical instability caused by the “arbitrary actions” of major global powers.
