Trump assures US ‘learning’ from Ukraine war
“We are witnessing a new era of warfare,” Trump said. “The drones being used are fast, precise, and maneuver in ways we’ve never seen before. We are learning from that.”
Trump urged the cadets to embrace innovation and take calculated risks in their military careers to remain effective and current in strategic thinking.
His remarks coincided with a report from The Times, which noted Russia’s superiority over Ukraine in the development and deployment of drones. Russian forces are reportedly using fiber optic-guided UAVs that are hard to detect or jam due to their unique connection method, giving them a battlefield advantage.
These wire-guided drones are described as highly agile and lethal, capable of evading traditional electronic countermeasures. According to The Times, such UAVs are transforming battlefield dynamics, affecting not only the tactics but also the morale and logistical capabilities of Ukrainian forces.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also stressed the strategic value of drones, stating in April that up to 4,000 first-person view (FPV) drones are being deployed to Russian troops daily in 2024. These FPV drones are primarily used in kamikaze-style missions, targeting everything from tanks to opposing drones. Recently, Russia released footage showing how these inexpensive FPV drones have successfully destroyed costlier Ukrainian reconnaissance UAVs.
