Trial for Former South Korean Military Officers Begins Next Week
The accused include the previous leader of the Army’s 707th Special Mission Group along with six additional soldiers, all of whom have been placed on mandatory leave, according to a news agency.
The initial court session is slated to be held on June 5 at the central regional military court, just two days following the nation’s early presidential election.
Among those standing trial are Brigadier General Lee Sang-hyun, former commander of the 1st Special Forces Brigade, and Major General Park Heon-su, who led the Defense Ministry’s criminal investigation unit.
All seven officers face formal charges for their role in the unsuccessful martial law attempt orchestrated by former President Yoon.
While Park has been relieved of his duties, the other accused soldiers have been officially removed from their positions.
Nevertheless, they remain enlisted servicemen, which allows the military to impose disciplinary actions if the court finds them guilty.
Additionally, the same military court is handling another case involving five prominent ex-commanders, including former martial law leader Park An-su, who are also charged with participation in martial law activities.
Last month, South Korea’s Constitutional Court ousted Yoon from the presidency due to his involvement in the martial law effort.
Yoon is further facing criminal prosecution for allegedly spearheading an insurrection related to the martial law attempt.
