South Korea Tries Seven Ex-Officers Over Failed Martial Law Plot
According to a South Korean news agency, those indicted include the ex-commander of the Army's elite 707th Special Mission Group, along with six other soldiers—all of whom have been placed on mandatory leave.
The initial court session is scheduled for June 5 at the Central Regional Military Court, just two days after the nation holds a snap presidential election.
Among the defendants are Brigadier General Lee Sang-hyun, the former head of the 1st Special Forces Brigade, and Major General Park Heon-su, who led the Defense Ministry’s criminal investigation division.
Prosecutors have charged all seven officers with involvement in the former president’s failed effort to impose martial law.
While Park has been suspended from his official duties, the other implicated officers have been removed from their posts. Despite this, all remain on active duty status, allowing for the possibility of further military disciplinary action should the court issue guilty verdicts.
In a parallel case, the same military tribunal is also reviewing charges against five additional senior commanders, including former martial law leader Park An-su, tied to the alleged military takeover scheme.
The Constitutional Court ousted Yoon from the presidency last month due to his role in the martial law plan.
Yoon is also under criminal investigation for allegedly orchestrating an insurrection in connection with the attempted coup.
